7th International Open Chess Tournament Kicks Off

Doha, March 12 (QNA) – The 7th International Open Chess Tournament “FIDE-Rated” started on Sunday at the Qatar Chess Training Center with the participation of 130 male and female players representing 23 countries.

President of the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) Mohamed Al Madhahka inaugurated the competitions in the presence of Secretary General of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) Hisham Al Taher.

The competitions are held with a 7-Round Swiss System of standard chess over a week during which all the regulations and laws of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) regarding the classical playing system and anti-fraud are applied.

The tournament carries total prize money of QR25,000, and all players under 2200 rating points took part.

The tournament witnesses the participation of Qatari national team players: Khaled Al Jamaat, Ibrahim Al Janahi, Muhammad Al Hammadi, Irfan Muhammad and Kholoud Al Khulaifi.

QCA President Mohamed Al Madhahka confirmed that the tournament which bears the name Abdullah Abdulghani & Bros Open Chess Championship 2023 “AAB Chess Open 2023” is one of the most important tournaments in Qatar, in light of the great participation and importance it enjoys from all male and female players.

Al Madhahka stressed to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the tournament which is held under the umbrella of the FIDE is among the main objectives set by the Association’s board of directors to expand the base of the game and attract many male and female players as well as the acquisition of many national team players with the necessary experience.

The AAB Chess Open brought the first FIDE-Rated Tournament to Qatar. It has become hugely popular across the country and is deemed one of the strongest chess tournaments in the region with high-rated players participating in it.
